New UK 5p and 10p coins

The Royal Mint has confirmed that new 5p and 10p coins will be issued from the 1st January 2012. By the end of 2012 it is believed the new coins will account for around 10% of the 5p and 10p coins in general day to day use. The existing older 5p and 10p coins will remain circulation whilst they are gradually replaced by the new coins through a natural change over.
How Do The New Coins Differ From Existing Coins?
The existing "silver" 5p and 10p coins have historically been made from a cupronickel, a metal alloy made of 75 per cent copper, 25 per cent nickel. From 1st January 2012 they will be made from steel, with a nickel coating. In most respects they will look identical and weigh the same, but sharp-eye observers will notice they will be 11 per cent thicker, moving from 1.7mm in depth to 1.9mm. They will also become magnetic for the first time.

2. Press buttons A + D together to enter display mode. The display will show "FILL", "FULL", or "AbCd".
